Need help legally separated for 2 years still not divorced??

My ex filed for a divorce back in 2009 and when we had a court hearing for change in custody with my son recently the judge told us we are still not legally divorced, I found out the papers after we waited the 6 months wernt completed so how can I get it finalized or does he have to get the forms since he filed? I live in california.
