Why isn't the death penalty in the US like in China? Why can't they carry out the sentence immediately?

In China, as soon as you are sentenced to death, they pretty much prepare you for your last meal, finalize the plans, and take out out to an execution field to be shot by firing squad. Why in USA does it take years? Isn't it a waste of tax money?
